Dr. Riegel has been involved in the study of sudden cardiac arrest since the early trials of public access defibrillation. Currently she studies patients with heart failure, a group particularly prone to cardiac arrest. She is also interested in studying the long-term recover of individuals who have experienced a sudden cardiac arrest.

Dr. Riegel has published almost 200 scholarly articles in a wide variety of professional journals. She has edited three books and written numerous textbook chapters. She is an active member of the American Heart Association and the Heart Failure Society of America. She has won numerous honors for her research, which has been funded by the National Institutes of Health, the American Heart Association, and numerous private foundations.
