Pregnancy-Related Strokes Increasing
By Todd Neale, MedPage Today
The percentage of pregnant women hospitalized for stroke has climbed in recent years at the same time that postpartum strokes have climbed markedly, researchers found.
Among hospitalizations in the prenatal period, the rate of any type of stroke increased by a relative 47% -- from 0.15 to 0.22 per 1,000 deliveries -- from 1994 to 2007, according to Elena Kuklina, MD, PhD, of the CDC's Division of Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention in Atlanta, and colleagues.
