On the afternoon of September 19, 2002, I was working at MasterCard International in O'Fallon, Missouri. While returning from lunch, I suffered a Sudden Cardiac Arrest. About two minutes later, I was discovered by two co-workers who immediately called MasterCard's Security Department.

Fortunately for me, most of the members of the Security Department are former EMTs, paramedics or firefighters. They are trained in "First Response" procedures and are certified in CPR and the use of AEDs.

The Security Department called 9-1-1 and they dispatched a First Response team to my aid. When they reached me about one minute later, they found me turning blue, without pulse and without respiration. Two of them immediately started CPR, while the others set-up the AED, attached it and began defibrillating me. On the second cycle, my heart started beating again and I began breathing.

When the ambulance arrived, I was ready to be transported to the nearest trauma center. There it was discovered that I had experienced a pulmonary embolism, causing the Sudden Cardiac Arrest.
