How to strengthen a community-based system of support for military caregivers

Alongside Service members who return home from war, exists a core group of individuals who help care for them. It is estimated that there are 5.5 million men and women in the U.S. who provide daily support to service members and Veterans with disabling injury or illness. From spouses and
parents to friends and combat buddies, military caregivers play an important role in the lives of America's wounded warriors. Beyond performing daily activities such as bathing, dressing and managing medications, often times, they must navigate a complex network of policies, systems, eligibility requirements, information and resources to care for their loved ones. Yet, in many cases, these military caregivers provide care at the expense of their own health and well-being.

This national web event explores the profile of military caregivers and examines the ways to best build caregiver support. It will feature Laura J. Bauer, MPA, the National Program Director of the Operation Family Caregiver at Rosalynn Carter Institute for Caregiving - Georgia Southwestern State University. Ms. Bauer will demonstrate the need for evidence-based caregiver support and offer information about Operation Family Caregiver, the importance of metrics, and ways in which service providers may help our military caregivers.
