Obituary for The Rev. Esther Kuhre

The Reverend Esther Kuhre died on March 10, 2012, at her farm in New Marshfield, Ohio. She was born May 25, 1929, in Manhattan, N.Y. Pr. Kuhre graduated from West Penn Hospital School of Nursing and received a BSN degree from Ohio University and a master of divinity degree from Trinity Lutheran Seminary.

Pr. Kuhre taught nursing for Holzer School of Nursing and served as geriatric administrator at the Athens Mental Health Center for nine years. She was instrumental in the formation of the Athens County Visiting Nurses Association (ACVNA) and served as their first visiting nurse.

In her mid-50s, she was ordained by the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and accepted a call to serve at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Frostburg, Md., where she served for nine years. After her retirement, she served as interim pastor at Christ Lutheran in Athens and as chaplain to the ACVNA.

A worship service celebrating her life was held on March 31, 2012, at Christ Lutheran Church, 69 Mill St., Athens, Ohio.
