Obituary for The Rev Chester M. Patten

The Reverend Chester McVay Patten, age 88, went to meet His Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Friday, November 23, 2012. The heavenly hosts sing, "Alleluia, welcome Home, good and faithful servant!" Chester was born on December 23, 1923, to Lee and Alice Patten of Butler, PA. He was the eldest of three children. He is preceded in death by his parents, his first wife and mother of his children Mary Jane Frey Patten of Westerville, OH., in 1989, his second wife Alice Mann Patten in 2001, and his sister Dorothy Frenau. He is survived by his brother, Lloyd Patten of Pennsylvania. Chester and Mary Jane had four children, his son, David Patten and wife, Cheryl of New Braunfels; and his three daughters, Carol Horton and her husband, Terry of Granbury, TX., Mary Anne Christian and her husband, Phillip, of Corpus Christi, TX., and Janet Hawks and husband, Doug of Cortez, CO. He had seven grandchildren, Aaron, Adam, Kristin, Jason, Amy, Matthew, Lucas; and six great-grandchildren. Chester started his career as an ordained Lutheran minister. He graduated from Capital University and Trinity Lutheran Seminary in Columbus, OH. His first congregation was Imanuel's Lutheran Church in Moses Lake, WA. He then moved to the Youth Department of the American Lutheran Church in Columbus, OH and Minneapolis, MN. After which he took a call to Ascension Lutheran Church in Indian Harbor Beach, FL. Later he took a call to Mt. Zion Lutheran Church in Conover, NC. While he was there, he took on additional duties as a member of the Board of Regents at Texas Lutheran University, Seguin, TX. Finally, he took a call to Emanuel's Lutheran Church in Seguin, TX. He finally retired in 1989. He did numerous part-time pastoral duties until 2003. In a positive loving way, the lives he touched throughout his ministry were too numerous to count. The Kingdom of God had a bumper crop of salvations due to his evangelical endeavors. I am sure the Lord was very well pleased with his accomplishments. He had a rich and bountiful life, finishing the good race and finally passing peacefully into eternal life with Jesus Christ. Oh death, where is your sting?
