Additional 'God's Work. Our Hands.' Sunday Service Projects and Pics!

Shortly after we shared our first story about how our congregations in the Southern Ohio Synod took part in the September 8 'God's Work. Our Hands.' Sunday service projects, we received a few more stories and photos from Zion Lutheran, Dayton; Fifth Lutheran, Springfield; Christ's Lutheran, Cambridge and All Saints, Worthington.

Members from these congregations were hard at work and play on September 8 with one goal in mind, being God's hands in service to others. Their service projects involved every age group in the congregation and touched the lives of many they will never know and some they got to know better for a long time to come. Here's what they did. . .

Zion Lutheran Church in Dayton spent the Rally Weekend learning about mission work, how it impacts the world and how they, too, are missionaries. The weekend culminated in the youth leading the congregation in a project of making dental hygiene kits to give to Hannah's Treasure Chest for distribution. Hannah's Treasure Chest is a local non-profit which seeks to meet the material needs of area children living in poverty. Here's what Pr. John T. Mittermaier recently posted on their Facebook page about the results of that day, "Zion Youth -- You are amazing. Thanks to your leadership in the 'God's Work. Our Hands.' Day community project, Hannah's Treasure Chest will receive a total of 832 items for Children's Dental Hygiene Kits. Way! To! Go!!" Way to go indeed.

Fifth Lutheran Church in Springfield, chose to invite residents of the Project Women home located near the church. Pr. Gesalman and members fixed a covered-dish dinner and shared Jesus' hospitality with their guests. Pr. Gesalman said, "We had a great time sharing stories and good food." Ah, nothing like a Lutheran potluck to bring people together.

Members of Christ's Lutheran Church in Cambridge gathered at South Elementary where they shared worship with South Elementary staff and families, provided lunch and then roled up their sleeves and "descended on the school's playground for an afternoon of service," reported Pr. Katie Kerrigan. A new outdoor reading area, which is a long-held dream for the students and teachers at South Elementary, was constructed and the playground was refurbished with new paint. South Elementary was chosen for this special day because the member's of Christ's Lutheran have an established outreach ministry with the school. This day allowed that ministry to grow and be strengthened.

Last, but not least, All Saints Lutheran Church in Worthington added fun service activities to their traditional Sunday School kickoff festivities. Stacy Wendt reports that the youth donated 81 tie-dyed t-shirts for God's Closet at First English Lutheran Church (one of the Southern Ohio Synod's mission congregations) and brought in 50 cans of fruit for Lutheran Social Services Food Pantries. 80 "birthday bags" with cake mix, frosting, candles and a noisemaker were put together and donated to Worthington Food Pantry.

From the looks of the photos shared, I think everyone will agree that service and fun can and do go hand-in-hand when we serve together.

Loved seeing the slide show and hearing about all the different "God's Work, Our Hands" projects. We really need to continue this type of information sharing. It's a great way to stay connected to each other. Thank you, Susan Barton-Nonno for putting this together.
