Obituary for the Rev. Edward Winkler

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. --John 3:16

The Reverend Edward Winkler was called home to be with the Lord on Sunday, August 18, 2013. He and his beloved wife, Ruth, were involved in a car accident which claimed both of their lives. Even in our sorrow, we rejoice in knowing that Jesus' promise of eternal life means that both Ed and Ruth are at home now with God.

The Rev. Ed Winkler was born in 1929 in Pittsburgh, PA. He attended Wittenberg University where he began his ministry studies and went on to Hamma School of Theology where he received his Bachelor in Divinity in 1961.

He served the following congregations prior to becoming Assistant to the Bishop of the Ohio Synod of the Lutheran Church in America: First English, Crestline, Ohio; St. Paul's, Greenville, Ohio; and St. John's, Zanesville, Ohio. After the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America was formed, Rev. Winkler went on to serve all three Ohio synods as Director of Evangelism. He retired in 1994.

Rev. Winkler and his wife Ruth were married in 1952 and have three children.

A memorial service honoring both Ed and Ruth will be held on Sunday, August 25, 2013 at Jerusalem Lutheran Church, 9282 Acme Rd, Seville, Ohio. The Rev. Callon Holloway, Jr., Bishop of the Southern Ohio Synod, will preside and The Rev. Ken Sauer, Bishop Emeritus of the Southern Ohio Synod, will preach. The service begins at 3 pm. No visitation with the family is planned.

Clergy are invited to process for the memorial service. The color is red.
