Bishop Dillahunt Appointed Chair of the Synodical and Churchwide Relations Committee of the Conference of Bishops

We are pleased to announce that Bishop Suzanne Dillahunt has been appointed by the ELCA Executive Committee to serve as chairperson for the Synodical and Churchwide Relations Committee of the Conference of Bishops. 

Congregations Invited to Attend 'Multiple Staff Workshop' Sept 8-10

The dynamics of mutiple staff ministry is something one learns after leaving seminary. Although multiple staffs are present in a minority of congregations in the ELCA, they tend to be highly visible ministries. Approximately 10% of the clergy in the Church serve in a team ministry and almost all lay professionals (Associates in Ministry, Diaconal Ministers and Deconesses) serve in a team setting.

This month's Feed My Sheep newsletter from the SOS Hunger Task Force highlights the feeding ministry at First English, Columbus that has given the congregation a new purpose and welcome presence in the neighborhood; the Kilted 50 For Charity that has our friends at the ELCA Churchwide office wearing kilts; and a connection between clean air and poverty.

The Parish Paper offers 'Ideas and insights for active congregations' and is made available to you to share with your congregation via hard copy, email or website thanks to your mission support contributions.

After 28 years, the group has decided to stop touring at the end of 2015. They are hoping to work with as many synods and congregations as possible before they retire from the road.

ELCA Leaders Call for Dignity, Compassion Toward Unaccompanied Children

Prior to the U.S. House of Representatives’ cancellation July 31 of its vote to provide an emergency response to the tens of thousands of unaccompanied children entering the United States, some members of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) had worked to contact their representatives to encourage them to “address the issue with dignity and compassion.”

Lutheran Disaster Response Provides Assistance for Ebola Outbreak in Liberia

The Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) will provide $10,000 in humanitarian assistance in response to the Ebola virus outbreak in Liberia. 

Liberia: Providing Healthcare Workers with Protective Equipment Against Ebola

In February 2014, a person with the Ebola virus disease (EVD) was registered in Guinea. By the end of April, the outbreak had spread to more than 250 people in Guinea and had crossed into Liberia and Sierra Leone. As of July 23, the World Health Organization (WHO) reports that there have been 1,201 cases of the Ebola virus disease in West Africa, including 672 deaths, making this the most severe Ebola outbreak in recorded history. 

Portico Adjusts 2015 Health & Disability Rates to Meet Community Needs

At its July 31 – Aug. 2 meeting in Minneapolis, Portico Benefit Services’ board of trustees voted to approve Portico’s recommendations regarding 2015 contribution rates.

Long-term care is the medical and/or social term for helping people who develop disabilities or chronic care needs. Long-term care insurance pays for long-term care services such as helping someone with walking, getting dressed, eating, bathing and care associated with Alzheimer's disease.
