Can You Tell I Went To A Symposium On Intergenerational Ministry?

To Summarize: Major research is revealing the significance of generations being together. Some families can gather four or five generations together on a weekly or monthly basis. Many cannot. This is where the church can step in.

The Symposium and the two books mentioned above build a theological, emotional, psychological, and social case for intentionally surrounding all ages will all generations on a weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly basis. Developmental theorists now believe the benefit of generations interacting together goes far beyond what anyone previous thought.

I spent several days with peers who made statements like...

  • We no longer say we had 30 people at an event. We say we had four generations present
  • Think about a poor choice you made or something you regret doing. There is a good chance grandma was not in the room when you made that decision
  • Children need multiple older generations around to model how to live daily life
  • Older generations act more appropriately when children are present
  • The full expression of faith cannot be experienced unless all the generations are in attendance
  • Imagine the memories of having your feet washed by a grandparent or parent at a Maundy Thursday Service
  • Youth Groups are an entry point into the congregation. We should then move children and youth into connecting intergenerationally with church members as soon as practically possible

Needless to say our Faith Webbing concept fits well with this new research. Contact me if you want to further the discussion
