SAVE THE DATE! 2015 SOS Assembly

June 5-6, 2015 Southern Ohio Synod Assembly at Capital University in Columbus. Assembly plenary sessions will take place on Friday and Saturday, June 5 & 6. Most congregations may send two voting members, plus their rostered leaders.

Please begin identifying your voting members now and plan to attend.

UPDATE! New Date Added for Regional Listening Posts for SOS Visioning Process Dates Set--Please Mark Your Calendars and Plan to Attend

All lay people of the Southern Ohio Synod are invited to attend one of the Visioning Process Listening Posts in your area during October and November 2014. Please spread the word in your congregation and gather as many people as possible to attend. Your part in the visioning process of the Southern Ohio Synod is crucial. Please note that these listening posts are geared toward lay people, but rostered leaders are also welcome to attend. 

Reminder! Congregations Invited to Send New Mission Interpreters to Information/Training Session on Sat Oct 25 at Synod Office

We invite you to send one person from your congregation to our Mission Interpreter Training Session on Saturday, October 25th at the synod office. This is the second year we have invited congregations that do not yet have a Mission Interpreter to send an interested person to this training. It is our goal in the Southern Ohio Synod to have at least one Mission Interpreter in every congregation. 

Save the Date! Congregational Hunger Leaders' Day at Mid-Ohio Food Bank, Feb 28 2015

In 2015, hunger leaders will gather at the Mid-Ohio Food Bank's warehouse and distribution facility in Grove City where we'll hear from our own Bishop Suzanne Dillahunt, as well as have an opportunity to tour the Mid-Ohio Food Bank facility, meet other like-minded Lutherans, learn how to: effectively promote and maintain a hunger ministry, successfully apply for an ELCA World Hunger Grant, where and how to advocate for hunger issues, and how to get a hunger ministry off the ground if you're just starting out. There's somehthing to learn and apply for everyone! 

New Malaria Videos to Keep Your Fundraising Efforts Going Until We Meet & Surpass Our Goal!

We are thrilled to announce some new ELCA Malaria Campaign materials—three short videos that help to demonstrate the impact of your gifts in Uganda and Burundi. We encourage you to share these videos widely—with your family, congregation and friends. 

Correction to 2015 Compensation Guidelines for Ordained Ministers

An error was identified and has now been corrected between the document approved at the 2014 Synod Assembly and what was posted to the synod website for the 2015 Compensation Guidelines for Ordained Ministers. 

SOS Constitution Task Force Timeline for Revisions--Preparing for Presentation at Assembly

The following letter was submitted to Bishop Dillahunt by the Southern Ohio Synod Constitution Task Force. The letter includes a timeline for revisions, which was presented to and approved by the Southern Ohio Synod Council on September 20, 2014. Bishop Dillahunt and the Synod Council feel the content of the letter and the timeline are important for every member of our synod to know so everyone understands the process that has and is taking place prior to the Synod Assembly voting on the adoption of the revised constitution in 2015. Please share this with your congregation.

The September 2014 issue of Reflections on Congregational Life addresses the role of a leader in a congregation as it relates to creating and maintaining a particular culture and climate within the congregation.

You are invited to attend a special ELCA Region 6 event on Friday, November 21 and Saturday, November 22, 2014 at Trinity Lutheran Seminary. The event is titled 'Immigration and Refugee Consultation' and features representatives from U.S. State Department, Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Services, ELCA, and Lutheran Social Services.

ELCA Presiding Bishop Offers Prayer for Africans Impacted by Ebola

The Rev. Elizabeth A. Eaton, presiding bishop of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), offered prayers and a continued commitment to stand alongside people impacted by the Ebola outbreak in West Africa. In a Sept. 29 letter to Lutheran leaders there, Eaton expressed her concern for them and the communities in which they serve.

Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton's October 2014 Article for The Lutheran--'See each other as brother, sister'

In her October column for The Lutheran, Presiding Bishop Elizabeth A. Eaton says the church can model respectful dialogue. When on the giving or receiving end of less-than-graceful communication, she suggests reciting Luther’s explanation of the Eighth Commandment. By doing this, congregational meetings might actually be fun! 

ELCA Members Advocate for Action on Climate Change

Hundreds of members of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) were among the more than 400,000 participants in the People’s Climate March in New York City on Sept. 21. The Lutheran delegation joined the People’s Climate Interfaith Contingent, one of the largest groups in the march.
