Managing Ethical and Legal Challenges after Catastrophic Disaster
TAANA "Encore" Teleseminar
TAANA is pleased to announce that in 2009, we will be conducting several teleseminars in an effort to provide members with continuing education without the hassle of travel and hotel stays. And the best part? If you missed the 2008 Annual Meeting & Educational Conference, all of our speakers have been handpicked from that very conference. Each presenter will perform their topic again for those were not in attendance or for those seeking a refresher. These teleseminars are scheduled throughout 2009, and they are available only to good-standing TAANA members. All of these teleseminars are free for TAANA members.
Approximately one month before each teleseminar, you will receive a broadcast fax providing details on how to attend.
Can't attend a teleseminar? The "Encore" Series will be available on CD immediately following each teleseminar. Click here to download the TAANA "Encore" Teleseminar CD Order Form.
Managing Ethical and Legal Challenges after Catastrophic Disaster
This presentation will address the significant ethical and legal challenges facing caregivers during and after catastrophic disaster. Additionally, the presentation will provide participants with tools they can use to advise their hospital clients with respect to planning for these situations. The presenter's interest in this topic is driven by his significant military experience with catastrophic disaster response, as well as his nursing and legal education. In light of the events following Hurricane Katrina, and the subsequent prosecution of caregivers for alleged euthanasia of patients at Memorial Medical Center, this topic is timely and critically important.
Objectives:
- Identify catastrophic disaster events, and appreciate the distinction between preparing for traditional disasters and catastrophic disasters.
- Describe the events occurring at Memorial Hospital in New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina and the subsequent criminal and civil legal actions that resulted from allegations involving involuntary euthanasia.
- Articulate the legal and ethical challenges associated with providing acute care during and after a catastrophic disaster.
Chad Stuart Priest, RN, BSN, JD, received his JD, with honors, from the George Washington University Law School in 2005 and his BSN, with distinction, from Indiana University in 1999. Priest also provides legal and operational counseling to health care organizations around disaster response and management issues. He also provides government affairs representation and public policy analysis for health care and social service clients including physician and nursing organizations and health systems.
