Official Rules of Competition

Following are the rules governing competitions for the Westbridge Camera Club.

The competition year extends from September until May of the following year.

There will be one monthly competition each month from September until April. Judging for the Annual Salon will be held in May.

Three Divisions: Color Slides, Color Prints, and Monochrome Prints.

All divisions compete each month. Sometimes the subject is assigned; usually it's open (no limit on subject).

Dues paying members may enter up to 2 pictures in the color prints and monochrome divisions. Members may enter up to 3 slides in the color slides division. You need not be present to enter. The essential photograph must be the work of the author; however, the photograph need not be home-processed. Printing and/or mounting may be done commercially. Members are honor-bound to submit eligible entries.

Judges are informed of the rules and the definition of any assigned subject. They are encouraged to comment about entries as freely as time permits. Competitions in each division will generally proceed as follows: there will be a run through, in which all entries will be shown to the judge and to the members. After the run through all entries will be shown again, and the judge will score each entry as 'in', that is, under consideration for an award, or 'out', that is, not considered for an award. The members running the competition shall take all the 'in' entries to a place where the judge can select the award winning entries.

Slide mounts must be 2" x 2". Put the title on the front, a 'thumb spot' (any visible mark) on the lower left-hand corner (as you hold it up for viewing), and maker's name on the back.

Prints may be any photographic medium. Prints may not be smaller than five (5) inches wide by five (5) inches tall, and the final mounted entry must not exceed thirty (30) inches in either height or width. Prints must be mounted.  Prints may be matted, but not framed.  Maker’s name, title of print, and “top” or “up” clearly indicated on the back of the mount.  Name must not be on the front.

One artist may not receive more than two ribbons in any division during a single competition.

Once a picture has placed 1st through 5th in any division, that picture may NOT be resubmitted in that or any other division. They are, however, eligible for submission to the Annual Salon, subject to Salon rules.

HM's may only be resubmitted in future years. They may be substituted in the annual salon for images that place 1st - 5th. They may not be resubmitted again if they place 5th or higher in the annual salon.

The Annual Salon

The Annual Salon is held in all divisions in May. Each member's total number of entries, in each division, is limited to the actual count of pictures which placed 1st - 5th during the club year. Any pictures which received HM, in the same division during the year, may be substituted. Substituting a new picture is not permitted.

If a member has only one such eligible picture, in any single division, he/she may enter a second picture of his/her choice in that division. If a member has no such eligible pictures, he/she may enter two pictures of his/her choice in that division, whether it was submitted before or not.

Awards are given for 1st - 5th places and three of the entries will receive HM.

Pictures awarded in the Annual Salon shall be ineligible for any further Westbridge competition.

Note: All entries in the Annual Salon will be held over from the day of judging until the showing at the Banquet in June.

At the annual awards banquet, those members with each division's highest accumulation of points (over the club year) will receive plaques. The year's five top scorers receive ribbons. Annual Salon winners receive plaques for Laurie Butts Award (Color Slide of the Year), Color Print of the Year, and Monochrome Print of the Year; images awarded 1st - HM receive ribbons. There are no limitations in the Annual Salon as to how many awards a member can receive.

The member(s) with the highest accumulation of points in all combined categories shall be given a plaque for the Photographer of the Year Award.
