BOATING IN CROATIA

By Rudolf Pećnikar, owner of Boat Office Croatia

Located on the coast of the Adriatic Sea, with over one thousand islands and clean, crystal-clear seas, Croatia attracts a huge number of boaters every year.

As a member of the European Union, Croatia attracts many boat owners from Germany, Austria and Italy, who traditionally keep their boats in Croatian marinas. In last several years a significant number of boaters from France and UK who arrived on cruising holidays stayed with their boats in Croatia. One reason for this is that flights from London to Split (located in the middle of the coast) or Dubrovnik takes only 2 hours.

Boating in Croatia as we know it today started in the mid '80's and today the Croatian coastline boasts 57 marinas, starting from North/West (near to Italy) going down to the South/East to the world famous historical city of Dubrovnik. Marinas are mostly fully booked and it's not easy to find berths on a yearly basis..

The Croatian boating season generally starts from in early April, running up to mid September. The fall is usually the best time for cruising because it's not too hot and too crowded. Many world famous people from the I.T., petrol, and film industries come every year, cruising with their mega yachts.

Additionally, Croatia's pure, natural environment is ideal for cruising, where five national parks allow you to enter with your own boat, offering free anchorage near beautiful old historical cities like Dubrovnik, Split and Zadar, and picturesque islands like Hvar, Vis and Korčula. Combined with lots of small domestic restaurants widespread all over the islands and along the coast, the ideal Mediterranian climate, calm seas and friendly people, there are many reasons why Croatia is an attractive and popular place for boating. Welcome !
