These Greater Cincinnati hospitals are among the 'World's Best,' Newsweek says

Four Greater Cincinnati medical centers are among the “World’s Best Hospitals” of 2021, part of a list released this week by Newsweek recognizing 2,000 medical institutions across a 25-country footprint.

Christ Hospital, the region’s second-largest hospital in terms of expenses, secured the highest spot locally on the U.S version of the list. It placed No. 76 out of 350 general hospitals,
and was followed by University of Cincinnati Medical Center (No. 134) and Jewish Hospital-Mercy Health (No. 190), respectively.

Cincinnati Children’s Hospital was also included on a separate “top specialized hospitals” list. That list didn’t include any numerical rankings, but Cincinnati Children’s was one of only 16 hospitals from the U.S. included out of 164.

Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., topped both the U.S. and overall "World’s Best Hospitals” list. Newsweek partnered with Statista Inc., a global data research firm, to reveal the rankings, which were published online Monday. Three data sources were used for the evaluation, the magazine said:

1. Hospital recommendations from peers: An international online survey included more than 74,000 doctors, hospital managers and health care professionals.
2. Patient experience: Surveys measuring patient satisfaction with hospitals.
3. Medical KPIs, or key performance indicators: Patient safety, hygiene measures and quality of treatment.

Newsweek said the “World’s Best Hospitals” award is a resource for patients when choosing a hospital for their medical needs. It also functions as a composite benchmark, the organization said, for hospitals to view their relative performance compared to national and international peers.

Nancy Cooper, Newsweek’s global editor-in-chief, said the list, the magazine’s third iteration, may be its most important yet.

“As the events of 2020 made clear, our lives rest on the kind of health care we have access to,” Cooper said in a release. “The 2,000 hospitals named stand out for their consistent excellence.”

Debbie Hayes, interim president and CEO of Christ Hospital, said in a release the award is a nod to its team – Christ has 1,200 physicians and 6,400 employees – who “provide the highest quality of care for our community.” The recognization is especially meaningful given the challenges brought on by Covid-19, she added.

“This award is among many recognitions our network has received this year despite the obstacles we have faced with the pandemic,” Hayes said. “Awards like this are tangible evidence that we are pressing forth, despite the odds.”
