Primary Focus
Reviews proposed development plans and zoning applications, providing assistance to customers in the application process. Performs basic research in preparing draft sections and reports of planning and zoning documents with editing and content assistance from Team Leaders and/or Director. Presents to City Boards and Commissions, attends meetings with zoning applicants, and answers customer inquiries.
Given the nature of this classification's duties/responsibilities, it has been designated as Exempt under the governing Fair Labor Standards Act regulations and, therefore, is not entitled to formal overtime compensation and/or formal compensatory time.
Supervisory Responsibilities: Oversees, mentors, and guides the work of Planning Technicians and Planning Interns depending on project or case assignment.
Examples of Duties
Essential Functions
Reviews development plans for compliance with City codes, applicable municipal regulations, plans and goals; work with customers to resolve conflicts in plans and the established policies, standards, and codes.
Attends meetings with applicants to support zoning applications; completes basic research and provides assistance for Planner II's and Senior Planners in the preparation of application presentations, development evaluation reports, draft sections of text, relevant maps, exhibits and display materials.
Works on assigned aspects of planning projects under the guidance of a Planner II or Senior Planner. Serve as project leader for internal projects and studies to gain project management experience.
Drafts sections of planning and zoning documents, writes and edits technical reports, planning document text and other correspondence in order to communicate analysis results and planning information to City staff, applicants, policy-makers, and the public.
Communicates weekly with other City contacts including the Division of Engineering,
Department of Information Technology, Department of Parks and Recreation, various consultants and Development Review Specialists.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree in Planning, Urban Design, Landscape Architecture, or other relevant field and 1-3 years of experience in a planning or related function, which may, in part, include an internship while completing undergraduate and/or graduate studies. Experience with Adobe, ArcGIS, and other planning-related graphic software is desirable.
