Sponsored by the Sexual Orientation & Gender Identity Caucus

Northern Illinois University

Sexuality & Communication seeks to be the premiere outlet for scholarship exploring sexualities and communication. The journal celebrates methodological and theoretical plurality, featuring an editorial team fluent in multiple paradigms that will work with a top-notch editorial board to facilitate the selection of thoughtful, high quality scholarship. The journal accepts manuscripts featuring research using quantitative and qualitative social scientific methods; critique-oriented methods such as rhetorical, cultural, or media criticism; and scholarship that is highly creative such as autoethnography or performance pieces. The journal, published four times a year with the opportunity for additional special issues, is ideal for those seeking a space for academic work that explores and advances the study of sexuality as a vital component of communication.

Manuscript topics can include, but are not limited to, elements of sexualities including identity, representation, interpersonal interaction, politics, health care, education, performance, public address, public policy, workplaces or other organizations, and other communicative understandings of sex and sexuality. The journal is sponsored by the Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity Caucus of the Central States Communication Association (CSCA).

Manuscript Submission

Quality manuscripts are welcome for submission. To facilitate the blind, peer review process, no material identifying the author(s) of submitted manuscripts should appear anywhere in the manuscript itself. All manuscripts should include (1) the title of the paper; (2) any acknowledgments, including the history of the manuscript if it has been presented at a conference or derived from a thesis or dissertation; and (3) a word count of the manuscript, including the title page, abstract, and bibliography. The first page of the manuscript should include the title of the paper, an abstract of 100 words or less, and a list of five to seven suggested key words. All manuscripts should be double-spaced and follow a style appropriate for the work and using the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (6th ed., 2009) and should be formatted as a MS-Word file (.doc or .docx).

Submissions of up to 35 pages (including title page, abstract, references, and appendices) will be considered, but all manuscripts should be prepared with reasonable concision. Manuscripts submitted to Sexuality & Communication must not be under review elsewhere or have appeared in any other published form. Upon notification of acceptance, authors retain copyright to their work but must agree to allow Sexuality & Communication to disseminate their work as part of the journal.

Send all manuscripts to Jimmie Manning (jman@niu.edu) as an attached document with the cover letter being written as the body of the email. The editor will confirm receipt of the manuscript and, pending the manuscript being appropriate for review, quickly facilitate the review process.
