CSCA 2019 Convention - Communication Ethics, Activism and Social Justice Interest Group Call for Papers

To the Members of the Communication Ethics, Activism and Social Justice Interest Group,

Greetings!

I hope this email finds you enjoying your summer break and perhaps working on some new research endeavors. As you explore new research opportunities, I hope you are still energized by the ideas exchanged at CSCA 2018 in Milwaukee. I invite you to share your work at next year’s convention in Omaha, Nebraska, April 3 - 7, 2019.

Conference preparations for next year’s gathering are already underway. As members of a newer interest group, we each have an opportunity to help shape the future. I invite you to get involved in this process by completing the following very brief questionnaire: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/KP2XVHN. I will use your responses to help determine reviewer and chair/respondent assignments. Thank you in advance for your willingness to help with these important roles.

As our group continues to grow, we all play a valuable role in spreading the word and rallying enthusiasm among fellow CSCA colleagues. Please share this group with members of your department as well as friends you know across the discipline. We can also connect through our Facebook page (you may join the group by searching “CSCA Communication Ethics, Activism and Social Justice Interest Group”). Please feel free to post and invite others to like/follow our page as well. This page can serve as a useful platform for collaboration, especially if you are interested in seeking panelists for a conference submission.

Thank you in advance for your contributions to the growth of our interest group. I am excited by your involvement and look forward to organizing a great program for the coming year.

Sincerely,

Unit Call:

COMMUNICATION ETHICS, ACTIVISM AND SOCIAL JUSTICE INTEREST GROUP
Call for Submissions

2019 Central States Communication Association Conference (CSCA)
Annual Convention in Omaha, Nebraska
April 3 - 7, 2019
Dialogue

The Communication Ethics, Activism and Social Justice Interest Group invites submissions of competitive papers and panels to be considered for programming at the 2019 CSCA conference in Omaha, Nebraska. Activism and social justice address matters including, but not limited to, inequality, dominant discourses, marginalization, and inclusion/exclusion. These issues may explore many diverse topics including:

  • How do we identify with and (re)define what it means to be an “activist”?
  • What roles and ethical responsibilities should Communication scholars assume in movements and/or counter-movements?
  • How do we create new communicative structures that allow for all voices to be heard?
  • How do we engage with diverse discourses that promote contested and/or threatening viewpoints towards certain persons and social groups?
  • In what ways do we gauge the differences and outcomes made by our active efforts?

Specifically, the conference theme encourages members to consider how we might create spaces of dialogue and challenge structures that often limit interactions. We urge members to develop compelling papers and panels that focus upon the convention theme, Dialogue. and offer avenues to construct authentic dialogue around these issues.

A variety of formats are encouraged including competitive papers, panels, and roundtable discussions. We are seeking papers, works in progress, and abstracts that highlight issues of ethics, justice/injustice, and activism across the discipline. We are interested in these subjects within contexts organizational communication, interpersonal communication, media, rhetoric, and other subdisciplines in the study of communication.

Preference will be given to panels comprised of members representing multiple institutions rather than a single institution. Given that many interests related to our division may be shared with other divisions and affiliated organizations within CSCA, we encourage co-sponsorship of program panels when appropriate.

Awards for the Top Student Paper and Top Competitive Paper will be recognized at the Communication Ethics, Activism and Social Justice Interest Group business meeting.

Guidelines for Submission: CSCA will have a new online submission system this year. Further details will be available on the CSCA website closer to the submission deadline.

Deadline: Submissions must be received by 11:59 pm on October 10, 2018.

**Note: All media requests should be made at the time of submission. The only media available will be a projector for computers. Computers will not be provided, and Internet access is not guaranteed.
