Borders & Breakthroughs

The Organizational and Professional Communication Interest Group invites the submission of competitive papers, panels, roundtable discussions, and innovative programming for the 2020 CSCA convention in Chicago, Illinois. The purpose of our interest group is to promote the efforts of researchers, teacher/scholars, and practitioners as they relate to the study and practice of human communication in organizational and professional contexts. Thus, any such topic related to organizational and professional communication is welcomed. 

We especially encourage submissions that relate to the convention theme, Borders & Breakthroughs. The focus should be placed on the spirit of the theme, rather than simply including the words in titles. I encourage you to both question and think beyond the borders that often limit our interactions in organizations.  Consider borders such as subject areas, research agendas and methods, and which borders need to be challenged.  What innovative concepts, inspiring teaching perspectives might we celebrate and extend as breakthroughs?

Papers and panels from both established and new scholars that celebrate strong scholarship and suggest new directions for research, application, and teaching are encouraged. Faculty, students, independent scholars and community members are all urged to submit to and attend the convention.  Submissions inclusive of all methodological perspectives in the communication discipline are expected and embraced. 

Planners are interested in all types of formats, including traditional paper panels, roundtable discussions, and working research and mentoring sessions. In terms of panels, preference will be given to those with panelists representing multiple institutions rather than representing a single institution. We are especially interested in submission formats that draw the audience into conversation about the theme and its relation to the study and practice of organizational communication. 

Guidelines for Submission

Competitive Papers: Only completed papers that conform to APA standards and are submitted through the CSCA online submission process will be considered for acceptance. The CSCA online submission process will prompt competitive paper submitters to provide the following information

• Paper title
• Paper abstract
• Full paper with identifying information removed
• Author affiliations and contact information—be sure all authors have a profile in the AI system
• Technology requests

• Instructions for students:
• Graduate and undergraduate students must type STUDENT on the upper right corner of first page of the full paper
• If the paper will be a student debut, please type DEBUT STUDENT on the upper right corner of the first page of the full paper
• To be considered a student debut paper: (1) the author must be a graduate or undergraduate student; (2) the paper must have single authorship; and (3) the paper must be the author’s first paper to be presented at CSCA

Panel Proposals: The CSCA online submission process will prompt panel submitters to provide the following information:

• Panel title
• Name of the person responsible for the panel proposal
• Panel member’s affiliations and contact information
• A 75-word rationale for the panel
• A 75-word description of the proposed panel, indicating roundtable discussion, paper panel (completed papers that encompass a specific topic), debate, spotlight, etc.
• A 200-word abstract for each paper if it is a paper panel submission or an explanation of each participant’s purpose/perspective if it is a different panel format
• Technology requests

The Top Competitive Papers and the Top Student Paper will be recognized at the Unit Meeting. 

Reminders:

• All technology requests must be made at the time of submission.
• Submission must be received by FRIDAY, OCTOBER 11, 2019, 11:59 p.m.
• Submissions for CSCA 2020 will begin August 1, 2019. You will find a link to the AI submission system at: https://www.csca-net.org/aws/CSCA/pt/sp/callforpapers
• Please review your profile on the CSCA website to make sure it is accurate. Instructions for editing your AI profile are available on the 2020 Call for Submissions page. All submitters and panel participants should be registered with AI.
