Borders & Breakthroughs
The conference theme of “Borders and Breakthroughs” for the 89th annual convention of the Central States Communication Association in Rosemont, IL (near Chicago O’Hare) refers to a border as a “demarcation of one thing from another,” while a breakthrough can create possibilities for crossing and/or transcending borders. Popular Culture, as an inherently interdisciplinary subject of expression, research, and means of teaching, is uniquely positioned to explore the conference theme of “Borders & Breakthroughs.” With this in mind, the Popular Culture Interest Group invites submissions of competitive papers, panels, roundtable discussions, and innovative programming that explore this theme in the myriad of ways that (to quote Raymond Williams) the “mundane” can be explored, interrogated, understood, and taught.
Some things to keep in mind:
- All Submissions must be completed by Friday, October 11, 2019, 11:59 pm CST.
- Submissions will be facilitated through the CSCA online submission system which can be found on the CSCA webpage. Questions can be emailed to Jennifer C. Dunn at jdunn@dom.edu, but submissions should NOT be sent via email.
- If you are submitting a competitive complete paper, please be sure to denote if this is your “debut” paper at CSCA, particularly if you are a student.
- For panels, preference will be given to those panels that represent multiple institutions and/or organizations rather than a single unit.
- Monetary awards will be given for the Top Faculty Paper and the Founders Award, for the Top Student paper.
Submissions Requirements:
Papers: Only completed papers will be accepted. Papers must include a title and a brief abstract. Graduate students should type “STUDENT” on the upper right-hand corner of the title page. If the paper will be a graduate student debut, please type “DEBUT STUDENT” on the upper right- hand corner of the title page. To be considered a graduate student debut paper, (1) the author must be a graduate student, (2) the paper must have single authorship, and (3) the paper must be the author’s first paper to be presented at CSCA. Indicate if author(s) are CSCA members. Author names and any identifying information must be removed prior to submission.
Panels: Please note that Panel submissions should include as much information as possible. For paper panels, well-considered abstracts will always help with review and ultimate consideration. For discussion panels, ensuring that the overall abstract explains the purpose of the panel and, when possible, the connection to the conference theme, will always help during the review.
