2nd Call For CSCA 2022 Submissions & Volunteer Reviewers, Chairs, & Respondents - Communication Education Interest Group

Hi Everyone,

Did September fly by for you? It did for me. I'm shocked that we're just two-weeks shy of CSCA’s October 8 submission deadline! We’re looking forward to the opportunity to re-connect with you in 2022.  Please review the call below as you think about what you want to submit to CSCA 2022. You’re always welcome to submit before the due date!

The Communication Education Interest Group is dedicated to the advancement of practical, pedagogical, methodological, and theoretical interests of its members. The Interest Group equally values the educational viewpoints and perspectives of its constituents, which include K-12, community college, and four-year college and university educators. The Interest Group seeks to promote dialogue among its diverse members and other interest groups at CSCA.

Submissions for the upcoming conference should center around the theme of “Re-Connect.”  Submissions that foreground the voices of marginalized groups and underrepresented scholars are especially welcomed.  Papers and panels should connect their submission to the overall conference theme or specifically consider topics related to the following questions:

• What does it mean to re-connect after the 2020-2021 year?  How are instructors re-connecting with students and colleagues?
• What is the role of re-connection in our classrooms and our conferences? Does re-connecting face-to-face mean disconnecting from some of the technologies and practices we’ve developed during the pandemic?
• What supports are effective in helping students re-connect to the higher education community after a year away? How can instructors help students re-connect?
• How can instructors best facilitate re-connection in learning for students in instructional environments?

SUBMISSION TYPES

Submissions are limited to the formats described below. However, if you have an idea for an innovative panel format that is not outlined herein, contact the Communication Education Interest Group conference planner (Nick Tatum; nick.tatum@acu.edu) for authorization to submit an alternative format.

Paper Submissions.

Only completed papers will be accepted. Papers must include a title and brief abstract (<100 words). Paper length (excluding title page and abstract) should not exceed 30 pages. If accepted for presentation, each paper will be put onto a thematized panel with other papers, and the conference planner will assign a respondent and a chair.

Special Notes:

• If the paper is authored solely by graduate and/or undergraduate students, the submitor should type “STUDENT” on the upper right-hand corner of the title page.
• If the paper will be a graduate student debut paper (i.e., the student has never before submitted to CSCA), please type “DEBUT STUDENT” on the upper right-hand corner of the title page. To be considered a graduate student debut paper, (1) the author must be a graduate student, (2) the paper must have single authorship, and (3) the paper must be the author’s first paper to be presented at CSCA if accepted.
• If you would like your paper to be considered for the Inclusive Scholarship Award, type “INCLUSIVE SCHOLARSHIP” in the upper right-hand corner of the title page.
  • To be considered as an exemplar of inclusive scholarship, the paper must demonstrate academic rigor in the examination of communication and historically marginalized communities/populations.

Discussion Panels Submissions. 

Discussion panels are those including 4 - 7 panelists who provide a brief opening statement concerning a topic and then engage in discussion, often with the entire attending audience. These panels must have a chair to introduce the panelists and to moderate the discussion.

Special Notes:

• Preference will be given to those with panelists representing multiple institutions rather than representing a single institution.
• Submitters are encouraged to highlight in their proposals what other interest groups could co-sponsors the discussion (when applicable).
• Discussion panel submissions must include the following: (a) title, (b) description (75 words or less), (c) rationale (that includes a complete list of participants along with their institutional affiliations, contact information, and and brief abstracts for each paper or explanation of each participant’s purpose/perspective).

AWARDS

The Communication Education Interest Group offers three awards based upon reviewer evaluations of outstanding submissions.  Those awards include the Top Competitive Paper (see “paper submissions” above), the Top Competitive Panel (see “discussion panel submissions” above), and the Gustav Friedrich Award for top student competitive paper (student paper submitted within “paper submissions” above; accompanied by a $100 cash award).

SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS

All technology requests must be made at the time of submission.

Submissions must be received by 11:59pm CST on October 8, 2021.
