Workshop Facilitators
Professor Joanne Giordano
Joanne Baird Giordano is the Chair of the Two-Year College English Association and Associate Professor of English, Linguistics, and Writing Studies at Salt Lake Community College. Her program administration work includes coordinating writing, developmental reading and writing, integrated reading and writing, corequisite support, online, ESL, and writing center programs. She is the developer and co-facilitator for a faculty development program that helps community college educators develop equitable and inclusive teaching practices. Her co-authored research on program administration, placement, college writers, and open-access teaching has appeared in College English, CCC, Teaching English in the Two-Year College, WPA Journal, Pedagogy, the Journal of Writing Assessment, other journals, and edited collections.
Professor Erin Lehman
Erin Lehman is an associate professor of English and dean/faculty lead for the online School of Arts, Sciences, & Education at Ivy Tech Community College in Indianapolis, Indiana. She has been teaching undergraduate writing for thirteen years—starting as an adjunct faculty member at IUPUI, and now full-time. Her students include working adults and parents; dual-enrolled students, and guest or transfer students from 4-year institutions. She enjoys mentoring undergraduate writers and serves as a Faculty Advising Editor for Young Scholars in Writing. She is the recipient of the President’s Award for Excellence in Instruction. Working with such a diverse group of students and faculty has given her insights that she is keen to share with CWPA’s membership as part of the upcoming CWPA Summer Workshop.
Professor Andrea Montalvo
Andrea Montalvo-Hamid is an Assistant Professional Professor of Writing Studies at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi (TAMUCC) in Corpus Christi, Texas. Along with teaching, Andrea has two coordinator positions at TAMUCC; she oversees Latinx Heritage Month programming and the First-Year Writing Program at the Island University. She has been teaching at TAMUCC since 2008, starting as adjunct faculty, then as a Visiting Assistant Professor, and was then hired as Professional Track faculty in 2014.
Andrea teaches exclusively in the First-Year Writing Program at TAMUCC, which includes Writing and Rhetoric I (ENGL 1301), Writing and Rhetoric II (ENGL 1302), and the Non Course Based Option (NCBO; ENGL 0099), and this program works in tandem with the First-Year Learning Communities Program (FYLCP) at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. This means Andrea enjoys collaborating with faculty across various disciplines and encourages all First-Year Writing instructors to act as facilitators for students – Writing is not something that can be taught, per se, but rather something students must continuously practice and develop.
Andrea’s research interests include Learning Community pedagogy and structure, Hispanic Serving Institutions (retention, curriculum, pedagogical practices, retention for faculty of color), Writing Program Administration, Writing Across the Curriculum, and Developmental Education (Integrated Reading and Writing). Andrea participated in the CWPA Online Workshop for new and returning WPAs last summer and enjoyed the readings, discussion, and the opportunity to share ideas with other WPAs. She is grateful for the opportunity to be a Workshop Facilitator this summer and is excited to meet and exchange ideas with like-minded WPAs and faculty.
WPA Summer Institute
"Writing Program Administration and Campus Leadership in Response to Artificial Intelligence"
Writing program administrators (WPAs) are in a unique position to lead programmatic and campus discussions of artificial intelligence (AI) applications like ChatGPT. To aid in such discussions, this institute will provide participants a deeper understanding of AI’s emerging capabilities, as well as the ethical dilemmas AI raises for teaching and learning (with) writing. Participants will consider how to lead discussions within their programs about pedagogy, curriculum, and policy, and they will learn strategies for leading campus-wide conversations about AI.
