Call for Papers, Panels, Workshops, Roundtable Discussions, and Community Programs

Deadline for Submissions: October 15, 2009

Undergraduate/graduate poster submissions are due on December 15, 2009.

The Voices of Diversity Interest Group of the Eastern Communication Association invites submissions of papers, panels, workshop sessions, symposiums, poster displays, roundtable discussions, debates, open forums, and community programs for the 101st annual ECA Convention. The year 2010 is the start of a new century of communication for the Eastern Communication Association. The convention theme prompts reflection about what comes next in our narrative. "Charting a course" implies a sense of direction, a temptation to definitiveness restrained by an inability to grasp what lies beyond our reach, what we cannot predict. The metaphor of "meeting new horizons" captures an emergent moment between what we already know and what is unknown and "Other," inviting responsiveness to what we cannot control. It asks the questions: What may we yet discover? What may we yet learn?

The conference draws on the legacy of Baltimore's pioneers who have chartered their own course-from Frederick Douglass, one of the foremost leaders of the abolitionist movement, to Thurgood Marshall, first African American Supreme Court Justice, to Reginald F. Lewis, lawyer, philanthropist, entrepreneur, to entertainers Cab Calloway and Billie Holiday-and invites us to cast forward a vision of what might spring forth "with the meeting of new horizons, in the ‘between' of past and future, defining a new and ever elusive ‘now'." We encourage other ideas that fit within the context of the 2010 theme.

For Voices of Diversity, this theme encourages us to reflect on the evolution and future directions of diversity research, pedagogy, and practice to explore multiple perspectives of the field that may lead us to new paths and horizons. As such, we invite panels, papers, workshops, symposiums, poster sessions, community programs, roundtable discussions, open forums, debates, and other formats regarding diversity from various communication perspectives that address research, pedagogy, and/or practice. We also welcome proposals that highlight strategies on teaching diversity-e.g. class activities and assignments. Submissions that are forward looking, innovative, and interdisciplinary are especially encouraged. Ideas related to diversity, but not specifically addressing the conference theme, are also encouraged. Please remember that papers and panel proposals may only be submitted to one interest group, but please note if your submission can be co-sponsored by another interest group.
