Call For Papers 2007

Eastern Communication Association

Human Information Technology
First Call for Papers

April 25 - April 29, 2007
The Westin Hotel
Providence, RI

The Human Information Technology interest group (which focuses on the intersection of communication and technology), in affiliation with the Eastern Communication Association, invites submissions for ECA's 98th annual convention in Providence, RI, the Ocean State. Rhode Island was the first colony to declare independence and the last to sign the Declaration of Independence. This spirit of autonomy makes Providence the perfect site for the 2007 ECA Convention.

The convention's theme is one word: Intersections. This one word offers broad and exciting opportunities for scholarly exploration of how communication and technology converge and exist in interpersonal, group, mass, and global communication situations such as media, marketing, relationships (both personal and business), and in our classrooms.

Technology is an integral and prevalent part of our communication experience, one that should be studied intimately and thoroughly. Communication technology is used interpersonally through means such as e-mail, instant messaging, or chat rooms. It is used as a mass medium through such means as blogs, viral videos, and websites, where traditional media cannot compete with the timeliness, and sometimes the rapid spread, of information.

Intersections is ripe for cross-disciplinary submissions, as technology is such a prevailing force in all aspects of communication. As you recall ways in which technology intersects with your daily use of communication (text messaging, e-mail, the Internet, teleconferencing, cell phones, Podcasting, etc.), consider submitting a paper or panel in which technology intersects as an important part in that communication.

Panels and papers addressing scholarship in any area of communication and technology are invited for submission. Human Information Technology (that which involves the intersection of communication and technology), encourages papers and programs that address the conference theme and those involving graduate students.

Submission Information: To speed both review and planning procedures, only completed papers and program proposals can be accepted.

Papers:

1. A detachable title page with the title of the paper and the author's affiliation, mailing address, telephone number, and email address

2. The word "DEBUT" marked on all papers written by authors who have not presented previously at a regional or national convention or STUDENT if the author(s) is a student.

3. A one-page abstract on the second page

4. A statement of professional responsibility on the second page (see below)

5. If there are multiple authors, please indicate who will be presenting at the conference.
