Business Meeting - Saturday, May 3, 2008 - Pittsburgh, PA

Members in Attendance: Annette Holba, Sanda Tomuletiu, Janie Harden Fritz, Pat Arneson, Joel Ward, Cem Zeytinoglu, Leeanne Bell, Brent Sleasman, James Pickett.

Janie Harden Fritz opened the business meeting and welcomed everyone.

Old Business

2007 Business Meeting minutes (accessible on the web) to be approved:

James Pickett moved, Brent Sleasman seconded, unanimous approval of the minutes.

Paper submission for 2008 call for papers: 17 submissions (papers and panels), accepted all but one; 2 panels co-sponsored with the Burke society. Submitted 7 programs, all accepted.

At the time of the business meeting there were 697 registered participants for the conference.

New Business

Pat Arneson presented information from the 2009 unit planners meeting.  She shared information about the Centennial Scholar Series.  Additional information will be distributed by ECA.  Suggestions for the centennial scholar at next year's ECA convention are made. Henry Johnstone and Ronald Arnett were suggested for submission to ECA as the group's centennial scholar. Cem Zeytinoglu suggested asking the Philosophy of Communication interest group members (via the listserv) for recommendations for the centennial scholar.

Additional panel suggestions include James Pickett's suggestion that would recognize the work of emerging scholars (he offered to chair the panel). Cem Zeytinoglu suggests organizing a panel with undergraduate students.

Nomination/Vote Interest Group Officers:

Janie Harden Fritz nominated Brent Sleasman for Vice-Chair Elect. Cem Zeytinoglu seconded. Unanimously approved.

Annette Holba offered to serve as secretary.  Pat Arneson seconded.  Unanimously approved.
