"Charting a Course: Meeting New Horizons"
The Philosophy of Communication Interest Group of the Eastern Communication Association invites submissions of papers, program proposals, and round-table discussions for the 101st annual ECA Convention to be held in Baltimore, Maryland.
The year 2010 is the start of a new century of communication for the Eastern Communication Association. The convention theme prompts reflection about what comes next in our narrative. "Charting a course" implies a sense of direction, a temptation to definitiveness restrained by an inability to grasp what lies beyond our reach, what we cannot predict. The metaphor of "meeting new horizons" captures an emergent moment between what we already know and what is unknown and "Other," inviting responsiveness to what we cannot control. We set our sights to focus on the future as we seek engagement with what is yet to come.
The 2010 convention will feature Focus on the Future programming, short courses, poster sessions, roundtables, and panels. The Philosophy of Communication Interest Group also would like to continue to collaborate with other interest groups to co-sponsor events.
Submission of Completed Paper
Completed papers should be submitted by email as two Word files. In the first file:
- Create a title page that includes the title of the paper and the author's affiliation, mailing address, telephone number, and e-mail address,
- Type the word "debut" on the title page if all authors have not presented previously at any regional or national communication convention,
- Include a one-page abstract on the second page,
- Include the statement of professional responsibility on the second page (see below),
- If the paper is multi-authored, please indicate who will be presenting the paper at the convention if the work is accepted.
In the second file submit the completed paper without title page.
Submission of Panel or Roundtable Proposal
Panel or round-table proposals should be submitted by email as one Word file. In the submission, include:
- A thematic title for the program,
- Names of chair and respondents, if any,
- Names, mailing addresses, telephone numbers, e-mail addresses, and institutional affiliation of all participants,
- Titles and abstracts for all papers or presentations,
- Program copy (a 75-word description), as it will appear in the final program,
- A detailed rationale for the program/panel.
Please notice that when submitting papers or panels a statement of professional responsibility, to which all presenters agree, should be included in all submissions (see below).
Statement of Professional Responsibility
In submitting the attached paper or proposal, I/we recognize that this submission is considered a professional responsibility. I/we agree to present this panel or paper if it is accepted and programmed. I further recognize that all who attend and present at ECA's annual meeting must register and pay required fees.
Equipment Requests
Equipment rental at conventions is very expensive, and ECA has a limited or minimal budget for this purpose. Please try to structure your presentation in such a way that equipment is not necessary. If such equipment is absolutely required, you are invited to bring your own equipment. You may request technology needs at the time of the paper/panel submission (list on the title page and reiterate in your e-mail); however, it is unlikely that we will be able to provide it.
