Charting a Course: Meeting New Horizons
Call for Papers, Panels, Workshops, Community Programs
Intercultural Communication Interest Group
Deadline for Submission: October 15, 2009
The Intercultural Communication Interest Group of the Eastern Communication Association invites submissions of papers, panels, workshop sessions, symposiums, poster displays, round-table discussions, debates, open forums, and community programs for the 101st annual ECA Convention in Baltimore, Maryland. The convention theme, "Charting a Course: Meeting New Horizons" directs us to set our focus on the future, to grasp what lies beyond our reach, what we cannot predict. This forward-looking approach encourages us to chart a course as we look at the future of our field and its impact on culture in the U.S. and around the world. During the conference, we seek engagement with what is to come-exploring the many possibilities of the future in culture research and practice, examining new horizons as we reflect on the past, the present and the future at the interstices of culture and communication. "What may we discover? What may we learn?"
The conference draws on the legacy of Baltimore's pioneers who have chartered their own course-from Frederick Douglass, one of the foremost leaders of the abolitionist movement, to Thurgood Marshall, first African American Supreme Court Justice, to Reginald F. Lewis, lawyer, philanthropist, entrepreneur, to entertainers Cab Calloway and Billie Holiday-and invites us to cast forward a vision of what might spring forth "with the meeting of new horizons, in the ‘between' of past and future, defining a new and ever elusive ‘now'." We encourage other ideas that fit within the context of the 2010 theme.
The 2010 theme provides a space for exploration of new courses and horizons in the development of cross-cultural and intercultural communication scholarship and practice. The analytical space in our field expands our understanding of the histories and contexts influencing tensions in cross-cultural interactions. This year, our interest group hopes to open this space by examining both the theoretical and the practical to explore multiple perspectives of the field that may lead us to new paths and horizons. Are there interdisciplinary explorations, new classroom innovations or models that push us toward new horizons, or new ways to engage our communities in discussions of communication and culture? Panels, papers, workshops, symposiums, poster sessions, community programs, round table discussions, open forums, debates, and other formats, should help to chart new courses and meet new horizons, imagining what our future may hold in culture research and practice. Submissions that are forward looking, innovative, and interdisciplinary are encouraged. Additionally, ideas centered on the impact of a particular intercultural communication scholar's work are also welcomed.
Please Note: AV equipment rental has become very expensive and ECA has a limited budget for this purpose. As much as possible, please structure your presentations to avoid the use of equipment. If you must use AV equipment, you are invited to bring your own equipment. You may request technology needs at the time of the paper/panel submission (list on the title page and reiterate in your e-mail).
