ECA - Health Communication 2010 Call for Papers
Call for Papers
Health Communication Interest Group
Eastern Communication Association 101st Annual Meeting
Hyatt Regency Baltimore on the Inner Harbor
Baltimore, MD
April 22-25, 2010
The Health Communication Interest Group invites submission of competitive papers, thematic panel program proposals, and innovative programming alternatives (such as roundtables, symposia, debates, open forums, and community programs) for the 2010 ECA Annual Meeting.
The theme of the convention is "Charting a Course: Meeting New Horizons." Following last year's theme reflecting on the first 100 years of ECA, this year's theme is meant to prompt reflection about what comes next in our narrative. "Charting a course" implies a sense of direction, while the metaphor of "meeting new horizons" captures an emergent moment between what we already know and what is unknown.
General information about the Call for Papers can be found at http://ecasite.org, but submissions to the Health Communication Interest Group should adhere to the following guidelines:
Competitive Papers
Authors are invited to submit completed papers dealing with health communication from any theoretical, methodological, or critical perspective. If papers have been presented at a previous convention, accepted for publication, or delivered in the form of another "public presentation," this fact should be made clear at the time of the submission. Competitive paper submissions should include:
1. A detachable title page with the title of the paper, names of all authors, their institutional affiliations, addresses, phone numbers, and email addresses (if your paper is multi-authored, please indicate who will be presenting at the convention);
2. A statement of professional responsibility stating, "In submitting the attached paper or proposal, I/We recognize that this submission is considered a professional responsibility. I/We agree to present this panel or paper if it is accepted or programmed. I/We further recognize that all who attend and present at ECA's annual meeting must register and par required fees" (papers that do not include this statement will not be programmed);
3. A 100-150 word abstract of the paper (with title appearing on this page);
4. A maximum of 25 pages of text (excluding title page and notes/references). Longer papers may be denied review;
5. No information in the paper that identifies the author(s) (beyond that which appears on the title page); and,
6. Authors who have not presented a paper at a regional, national or international convention should include the word "DEBUT" in the upper right-hand corner of the title page. Papers authored by current undergraduate or graduate students should include the word "STUDENT" in the upper right-hand corner of the title page. All authors must meet debut or student criteria for the paper to be so designated.
Panel and Programming Proposals
Panel program proposals should focus on a unifying theme relevant to research, theory, or teaching in the area of health communication. Programs may consist of a chair, paper presenters, and a respondent; however, round-table discussions, symposia, debates, performance venues, community programs, or other unique formats are encouraged. In alternative formats, respondents may be included or omitted as appropriate.
Innovative program proposals, especially those that provide opportunities for engaged interaction among participants and attendees, are encouraged. Programs that can be co-sponsored with other interest groups are also welcome. Panel program proposals should include:
1. Title and rationale for the thematic panel/program;
2. Title and 100 word abstract of each presentation;
3. Names, affiliations, addresses, phone numbers, and email addresses of all participants;
4. Names of chairs and respondents (if any);
5. A program copy (a 75-word description) as it would appear in the program; and,
6. A statement of professional responsibility stating, "In submitting the attached paper or proposal, I/We recognize that this submission is considered a professional responsibility. I/We agree to present this panel or paper if it is accepted or programmed. I/We further recognize that all who attend and present at ECA's annual meeting must register and pay required fees" (panels that do not include this statement will not be programmed).
