ECA 2013 Convention - Call for Papers - Philosophy of Communication
Call for Papers: Eastern Communication Association 2013
Philosophy of Communication Interest Group
The 2013 ECA convention promises great opportunities for us to participate in meaningful, scholarly dialogue. The 2013 conventions theme is Confluence. Confluence is the bringing together of ideas from various perspectives and may take place in content, media effects, technology, job roles or responsibilities, and ownership. Downtown Pittsburgh itself emerged where the confluence of the Allegheny and Monongahela Rivers forms the Ohio River. Confluence is exemplified by the long tradition of communication research bringing together ideas from various perspectives of communicator, message, channel, and context to better understand how humans create meaning and relationships. Confluence also describes the best in our interdisciplinary scholarship. Given this years convention theme, co-sponsorship of panels between interest groups is especially encouraged where scholarship builds on convergence between traditions. We welcome all philosophy of communication-related submissions, but particularly encourage those that address the conference theme.
The convention will feature programming related to the convention theme that includes competitive papers, short courses, poster sessions, roundtables, and panels. The deadline for receiving submissions is October 15, 2012 for papers and panel proposals.
In addition, the biennial Basic Course Conference will take place on Wednesday (April 24th) and the Third Annual James C. McCroskey and Virginia P. Richmond Undergraduate Scholars Conference (USC) will run concurrently with the ECA convention on Friday and Saturday (April 26-27). A statement of professional responsibility must be included with all submissions.
In submitting the attached paper or proposal, I/We recognize that this submission is considered a professional responsibility. I/We agree to present this panel or paper if it is accepted and programmed. I/We further recognize that all who attend and present at ECAs annual meeting must register and pay required fees.
**If the paper is a multi-authored paper, please indicate who will be presenting at the convention**
Please take a moment and read ECAs statement on technology and prepare accordingly as you consider your submission:
Statement of Challenge: The decision to provide technology at the annual meeting of the Eastern Communication Association is a difficult one. ECA must balance the fact that we are a communication association with the fiscal reality: Technology use is expensive.
Statement of Usage: All requests for technology must be made by the Interest Group Program Planner at the time of final program submissions (normally, this is around mid-November). Any requests made after that time will not be honored. Upon receiving those requests, the Convention Planner will review the importance and necessity of the requests, examining the individual submission and its purpose. Those programs ranked highest by the program planner that incorporate technology will be given priority. Those programs with lower rankings will probably not be able to include technology. The decision to provide technology will be guided by 1) the Convention Planners budget, 2) the need and necessity of the technology for the execution of the program, and 3) the availability of technology. In some cases, the ECA 2nd Vice-Presidents school may be able to assist in securing technology. However, ECA Convention Planners should not expect this assistance. ECA will not approve requests for the following technology: personal computers, laser printers, satellite links, teleconference equipment, LCD panels and projectors, video data projects, and digital versatile/video disc equipment. Although ECA members may wish to rent this equipment from the hotel at their own expense, those individuals are responsible for the equipment, including protecting it from damage and theft. Further, ECA is not responsible for this equipment. Finally, the hotel should not be expected to provide service for, or assistance with, personal technology that is brought into the hotel. Although every effort will be made to provide technology as requested, the Convention Planner will necessarily examine whether the integrity of the submission will be jeopardized if technology is not available.
