The Intercultural Communication Interest Group is seeking paper and program submissions for ECA’s Annual Convention to be held at The Omni Providence located in downtown Providence, RI, April 23-27, 2014. The convention theme is “Communities of Dissent: A “Lively Experiment” in Dialogue, Diversity, and Discourse.” Its goal is to explore the expression and suppression of dissent across communication contexts- relational, organizational, mediated, social, and political, and the attendant implications for such concerns as relational quality, community identification, civic engagement, public dialogue, accountability, and justice.
Given this years’ conference theme, the intercultural interest group encourages works that explore the expression and suppression of dissent in intercultural communication contexts including, but not limited to: Critical Intercultural Communication, Transnationalism, Diaspora, and Migration, Queer Intercultural Communication, Asian Pacific Communication, and Media Studies, as well as African American Communication and Culture, Political Communication, Gender Studies, and Religious Studies with an intercultural communication focus.
All submissions must be made electronically and received by October 15, 2013. Coinciding with the conference theme, the intercultural interest group highly desires submissions for Workshops, Round Table Discussions, Symposiums, Debates and Open Forums.
Individual Paper Submissions
Individual papers are completed papers that report original research, provide an extensive literature review or state of the art, or showcase some other form of scholarship.
Individual Paper Submission Guidelines:
*Papers that are to be considered will be no more than 25 pages (excluding title page, abstract, references, and appendices) and comply with the guidelines set forth in APA 6th edition.
*Please mark the word “debut” on the top right corner of the abstract page if the author has not presented previously at a regional or national conference.
* Files must include the statement of professional responsibility that appears below.
** If the paper has multiple authors, please indicate who will be presenting at the convention.
*Submit TWO files (see below) concerning your submission, saved in Microsoft Word (.doc files) to Dr. Nicole Files-Thompson at email@example.com. Include in the email subject line the abbreviation “ECA” and the title of your paper. Include in the text of the email any requests for presentational aids (please see the technology statement listed below).
* The first file should include the completed paper; a one-page abstract; and a title page with the author name(s) and contact information (affiliation, mailing address, phone number, email address), the word “debut” if the author has not presented previously at a regional or national conference, an indication of who will present for multi-authored papers, and the statement of professional responsibility which appears below.
* The second file should include the completed paper beginning with a one-page abstract. All author-identifiers (excluding previous scholarly works cited in the paper and listed on the reference page) should be removed from this file.
We highly encourage submissions for a variety of programs including papers’ panels, round tables, debates, open forum, workshop, and symposia. Feel free to contact the program planner with any ideas before you submit; we are happy to help with arrangements or contact potential participants. Kindly find program descriptions below.
Paper Panel: a program where three to four speakers present individual papers on a specific topic area. Each panel will have a chair to introduce each paper and moderate the presentation of papers and any discussion; a respondent should also be provided as deemed by the panel members.
Workshop Session: a program led by two or three experts on a particular topic, with audience involvement and participation.
Round Table Discussion: a program featuring 5-8 presenters who briefly share a position paper or summary of recent research on a focused topic moderated by a chair with “on-the-spot” interaction and discussion by participants and audience.
Symposium: a program where three to five invited speakers present a predetermined section of specific topic introduced by a chair who initiates audience participation through questions and answers or in an open forum.
Debate: a traditional debate on an announced topic, with pro and con statements and rebuttals.
Open Forum: A semi-structured public discussion of a predetermined topic of interest introduced and moderated by a chair. The goal of such a program is to share information, ideas, concerns, and special interests
** Please Note: Panels should strive to include as many different institutions as possible.
Program Submission Guidelines:
*Submit one copy of your proposal saved in Microsoft Word (.doc) to firstname.lastname@example.org Include in the email subject line the abbreviation “ECA” and the title of your program. Include in the text of the email any requests for presentational aids (please see the technology statement listed below). Each submission must include the following:
*A title page with a thematic title for the program; panelists’ names and contact information (affiliation, mailing address, phone number, email address); and the statement of professional responsibility that appears below.
*Names of the chair and respondent, if any (note: individuals may not simultaneously chair, respond, and/or participate – a variety of individuals is required for panels)
*A rationale for the program.
*A (maximum) 150 word abstract for each presentation if applicable.
*A description of the panel (maximum 75 words) to appear in the final program.
* The following statement MUST be included with every submission of a paper or panel in order for it to be eligible for review. If it is not attached with a submitted document, the chair is responsible for obtaining a completed copy of this form prior to the paper/panel being officially programmed for presentation at the convention.
In submitting the attached paper or proposal, I/We recognize that this submission is considered a professional responsibility. I/We agree to present this panel or paper if it is accepted and programmed. I/We further recognize that all who attend and present at ECA’s annual meeting must register and pay required fees.
* ECA’s Technology Policy: Equipment rental is very expensive. Therefore, before requesting technology, please read ECA Technology Policy.
* Submissions that do not comply with the guidelines listed above will be returned.
