FBI Honors AARP Minnesota with Director’s Community Leadership Award

FBI

MINNEAPOLIS, MN—The FBI’s Minneapolis Field Office has announced that Jay Haapala, Associate State Director-Community Engagement for AARP Minnesota, is the recipient of the 2020 Director’s Community Leadership Award (DCLA). Every year, each FBI field office honors a person or group that has demonstrated outstanding contributions to their communities through service.

Mr. Haapala partners with FBI Minneapolis to protect the senior citizen population from fraudsters who prey on the elderly. Elder fraud is a significant problem in the United States. The FBI’s Internet Crimes Complaint Center reports that around the country, people over 60 reported fraud losses of more than $1 billion in 2020, up $300 million from 2019.

Mr. Haapala’s extensive collaboration with law enforcement and other fraud-fighting organizations and his communication through AARP’s channels helps the FBI educate seniors about frauds and scams.

Mr. Haapala’s expertise and knowledge of the key stakeholders involved in fighting elder fraud along with his willingness to be a connector among them has greatly enhanced the FBI’s Community Outreach program to educate people on this issue.

Mr. Haapala and AARP Minnesota have positive effects on people in so many meaningful ways. The FBI is proud to honor his leadership and service with the designation as the Minneapolis Division 2020 DCLA recipient.
