Bradenton Herald

An Army employee accused of funding her extravagant lifestyle by stealing more than $108 million from a grant program designated for military families was sentenced to jail time, officials said.

Janet Yamanaka Mello, 57, was sentenced to 15 years in prison on five counts of mail fraud and five counts of filing a false tax return, according to a July 23 news release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Texas. “I hope that we were able to communicate the level of remorse that Ms. Mello has for her actions,” Mello’s attorney, Albert Flores, told McClatchy News in a statement on July 24.
