Suspect in First Hawaiian Bank robbery indicted

Hawaii News Now

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) - The man accused of releasing pepper spray while trying to rob a First Hawaiian Bank in Waikiki has been indicted by a grand jury.

An Oahu grand jury indicted Charles Christian, 66, of robbery in the second degree.

The 66-year-old is accused of robbing the First Hawaiian Bank branch on Kalakaua Avenue on Monday, Sept. 29.

According to court documents, Christian approached a teller and handed her a note that read, “I need money $50 $100. I don’t want to hurt you.”

The teller was unable to provide those exact denominations and left to speak with her manager, documents said.

Christian left the window and was observed spraying a chemical, later determined to be pepper spray, in the lobby before walking out, documents said.
