3 men plead guilty to $579K identity theft, unclaimed property fraud scheme

WNEM 5 - Saginaw, MI

MID-MICHIGAN (WNEM) – Two from Mount Pleasant and one from Saint Louis have pled guilty to an identity theft and unclaimed property fraud scheme, according to Michigan Attorney General (AG) Dana Nessel’s office.

The AG’s office said 46-year-old Averill Dintaman and 51-year-old Daniel Nolan, both from Mount Pleasant, and 59-year-old Dwayne Johnson from Saint Louis have pled guilty to the scheme, which totaled over half a million dollars.

In 2022, Dintaman, Nolan, and Johnson conspired to steal someone’s identity and forged a fraudulent durable power of attorney to get an unclaimed property check in the victim’s name for $579,551.99, said the AG’s office. Johnson posed as the victim at the Department of Treasury’s Unclaimed Property Office to get a second copy of the check.

The three were charged by the Department of Attorney General in May, said the AG’s office.
