How an Iranian Cyberattack Shut Down a UK Powerplant

Cyber Magazine

Trevor Dearing, Senior Director of Critical Infrastructure at Illumio says cyberattacks are part of geopolitical conflict, as hackers shut down power plant

Escalating its cyber offensive against the West, reports show that Iran-linked hackers shut down a power plant in the UK for four days.

The cyberattack against the power facility occurred around the same time as Iranian hackers targeted water supply systems in 12 states in the US, The Telegraph reports.

The affected plant was relatively small, which allowed the outage to pass without much notice as the country’s power supply was not massively impacted.

As attacks against critical infrastructure systems motivated by geopolitical goals continue to rise, the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) has warned power companies of the risks of cyberattacks against them.
