Stolen employee password caused city cyberattack, mayor says

News 2 KNOP North Platte

NORTH PLATTE, Neb. (KNOP) - City officials said a stolen employee password caused last week’s cyberattack on city and county computer systems.

Mayor Brandon Kelliher said the city’s IT team caught the breach quickly and brought in state and National Guard cyber experts to review the systems.

Kelliher said residents’ information is secure and no data was lost.

“Good teamwork made all the difference,” Kelliher said. “We came out of this stronger and better prepared, and that’s good news for everyone in Lincoln County.”
