President's Message - 

My 2-year term as president of IHCNO concludes at the end of the year and an election for President will take place at the Board of Director meeting on November 20. I want to briefly share some of the organizational accomplishments of 2024-2025 and take a look forward for the organization.

2024-2025 Accomplishments

A primary goal for IHCNO is to bring together home-based care nurses worldwide to share ideas, learn from each other, and advance the quality of home healthcare nursing practice. In 2024, IHCNO became a member organization, and we now have 113 Individual and 4 corporate members. I humbly thank each of you for your commitment to building this group of international nurse leaders and I welcome more nurses to join us.

Change is constant, and IHCNO is in the process of changing to a new application management service (AMS) platform that ensures software on a website works correctly. Website platforms and many other aspects of technology are now becoming part of nursing knowledge whether we work in direct patient care or management.

Communication among members and anyone interested in home-based professional nursing practice has been a priority. The IHCNO monthly newsletters provide a wealth of information to introduce you to our leaders, projects, and service opportunities on committees. My quarterly 60-minute President’s Forums are informal discussions where I speak directly to members and hear what is important to them. I invite you to the next President’s Forum on 11 November at 8 am Eastern Standard Time. The Zoom meeting link is available in a separate newsletter article and on our website, IHCNO.org.

IHCNO provided a series of 4 webinars this year with the topic of Advancing Home-Based Nursing Practice: Into the Future. You can view the webinars on the IHCNO website, at no cost to members.

I, along with other IHCNO colleagues, have had the pleasure of talking with many of you during conference presentations, meetings, and President’s Forum discussions. In 2024, I traveled to Singapore, Hong Kong, Macau, China, and Japan. This year I gave presentations in Vienna Austria, Helsinki Finland, and Seattle Washington U.S. Visiting the homelands of IHCNO members taught me much about what we have in common and how to work together to build nursing expertise.

IHCNO conducted research to develop the scope and standards of home healthcare nursing practice. In collaboration with the American Nurses Organization and led by Dr. Mary Narayan, we conducted an original study using 4 surveys to identify the scope and standards of home healthcare professional nurses and measurable competencies related to the standards. Hundreds of nurses from 38 countries took part in the study. Findings are being reviewed by an international group of nurse leaders and will be published in early 2026.

Another accomplishment by the IHCNO Research Committee is to award the 7th annual Marilyn D. Harris research grant. The grant increased to $5,000 this year and resulted in a record number of application submissions. The grantee will be announced this month. Prior grant recipients have made significant contributions to home healthcare nursing practice, education, and leadership. Read about them and their work on the website under the Research tab.

Future Plans

I hope you will join us in the IHCNO 5th global conference June 17-19, 2026, in London. In a landmark collaboration, IHCNO, The Association of District Nurse and Community Nurse Educators (ADNE), and City St. George’s University of London will bring together global leaders, practitioners, educators, and researchers for Caring Beyond Walls: The Power of Nursing in Homes, Communities, and Primary Care Settings.

Plans are also underway for a 2027 international conference in the U.S. More information will be shared in coming months.

As our membership increases worldwide, members have expressed interest in developing chapters within geographic areas such as Asia and Scandinavia. For now, I recommend groups use the Member’s Only feature on the IHCNO website to communicate through communication threads.

In early 2026 we will assign a task force to revisit the IHCNO mission and goals and determine if they still fully describe the organization and meet the needs of members. Let me know at info@IHCNO if you are interested in joining this task force. In addition, we need additional members for the Bylaws Committee to update the document to reflect the purpose and activities of the organization.
