Sealing Your Success header

ISD Distributor Members can now take advantage of new  training and educational online seminars. Sealing Your Success e-Seminars focus on technical topics, leveraging expertise from our Associate members and others to bring you the latest developments in sealing technology, back to basics sessions on manufacturing or fabrication processes, or other technical topics you’d like to see – all designed to support the success of you and your employees.

Each e-Seminar lasts 45 - 60 minutes and includes opportunities for Q&A. Sessions are scheduled at mid-day to allow participants to conduct lunch-time training sessions. Over 80 ISD members participated in the first two sessions (described below). February 9, 2018: Update to ASME B16.20 – Performance Based Evaluation on Spiral Wound Gaskets; 36 minutes

ASME B16.20 has a major change included in the latest revision (2017), which has now been released. In the specification, a performance based initiative was adopted.

Cliff Goldstein of Eclipse Engineering lead a session on hydraulic seals, specifically working with a basic hydraulic cylinder being used to support a gantry involved in a rocket launch.

April 27, 2016 - Sealing Application Working Session - 40 minutes

In conjunction with our Sealing Your Success e-Seminar series, we’re trying out an idea for exploring how to figure out optimum solutions to customer sealing issues. This will be an open discussion led by ISD board member Cliff Goldstein who presented the Dynamic Sealing session at the recent Spring Tech event.

Chris Gruner of Eclipse Seal will be conducting an e-Seminar discussing Surface Finish Considerations as Applied to PTFE Sealing Elements. Chris and Cliff Goldstein of Eclipse provided several related sessions at our recent Spring Technical event in Houston, and Chris will be providing part of that content along with additional material on industrial finishing processes. This seminar will be beneficial whether or not you attended the Spring Event.

Cliff Goldstein of Eclipse Engineering presents Part 2 of a two part electronic seminar beginning with application of an O-Ring and finishing with Spring Energized Polymeric lip seals for static, rotary, and reciprocating applications. The purpose of this e-seminar is to give the listener an exposure to a variety of different sealing solutions that their customer may consider, and the conditions under which different solutions should be selected. We start with the most basic low cost solution, the O-Ring, and move up to the Mechanical Face Seal.

June 26, 2014: "The Process of Hydraulic Fracturing, the Case in Favor of Fracking and the Arguments Against It"; 26 minutes

This webinar past ISD President, Larry Goode shares his expertise which includes an excellent grounding in how fracking is done, and some great diagrams outlining the process and how it works. It goes on to outline the issues that have been leveraged by both supporters and detractors for and against fracking. This webinar serves as a good introduction to the process of and issues surrounding fracking.

November 15, 2013: "Proper Gasket and Practical Bolting Methods" ; 48 minutes

Lee Melvin, Leader Global Technologies. This e-Seminar covers the basics of selecting a gasket and proper gasket installation with bolting practices. It also covers the impact of leaking flanges and the importance of insuring the flange sealing surface is inspected and proper flange alignment is achieved. This session is intended to expand the knowledge base for the Inside or Outside Sales Professionals consulting with end users and clients regarding gasket applications. This should allow the attendees to become more proficient at communicating how proper gasket selection and installation can assist the client in Lowering their overall total installed cost for these products.

April 4, 2013: "History and Evolution of Gasketing Technology"; 64 minutes

Lee Melvin of Leader Global Technologies covers Gasketing Technology and its Evolution starting in the 1940’s when Asbestos was the gasket material of choice and most of the current flange designs were done around Soft Sheet Materials. It covers the basics of the soft sheet manufacturing process and how that technology has evolved into the use of Non Asbestos materials for both sheet goods and spiral wound gaskets. We will also cover the impact of transition to spiral wound gaskets have had on seal ability, recovery, and overall performance.

Sept 2012: Proper selection and Installation of Compression Packing; 1 hour 10 minutes

Proper attention to selection and installation of compression packing will ensure a high degree of success in plant operation of pumps and valves. This session will focus on selection and installation procedures, as well as types of packing materials and lubricants.

May 18, 2012: "Gasket Stress, Load and Torque"; 54 minutes

Leader Global Technologies discusses leak-free plant operation which is a universal goal; this session will focus on how to ensure joint integrity through the use of gasket selection and practical bolting methods. The information provided will include some of the basic elements needed to achieve "leak free" operation of large diameter flanged joint connections. It will focus on gasket stress issues, load and torque, and include a look at the technology behind bolted joint assemblies. Topics will include joint analysis, evaluating flange data, machining procedures, bolting basics (both theory and function), radial shear, gasket styles, and new equipment design such as Camprofile gaskets. There are no silver bullets, but leak-free operation is likely easier than you think.

March 16, 2012 - "ASTM D2000 System for Classifying Rubber Materials" (Presentation only, no audio)

Marty Loso and Wally Hansen of Precision Associates will provide an in-depth look at the ASTM D2000 system for classifying rubber materials. This system is frequently used to specify desired rubber properties and as a comparison of rubber compounds produced by different manufacturers. This presentation hopes to enable seminar attendees to be able to succesfully decode the various letters and numbers and to use the system to write their own call-outs using the ASTM manuals.

May 13, 2011 - "Reformulating Rubber Manufacturing Under Highly Competitive and Uncertain Times." (Presentation only, no audio)

This topic will deal with how various compounds of rubber sheet are made, were they are commonly recommended for use, and identifying failure modes when improperly applied. The presenter, Paul Smith, has been involved with industrial rubber use for more than 55 years as a shop converter and fabricator, salesman for BF Goodrich Industrial Products, and associated with distribution marketing at Fabricon, Beltservice and Apache Hose and Belting before joining American-Biltrite in 2001. He is now the Manager of Business Development and a current Board Member of ISD.

April 1, 2011: "Camprofile Technology – Why use Camprofile Gaskets and Where"; Lee Melvin, Leader (Presentation only, no audio)

Camprofile technology is becoming the future of metal gasket sealing solutions for many fixed equipment and piping applications. This topic will focus on what Camprofile gaskets are, why they are used and how they are applied. With tighter sealing requirements due to government regulated demands and new industry standards; Lee Melvin, Senior Sealing Engineer for Leader Global Technologies will present on how to meet those needs. Lee has 20 years in the industry with both product and equipment application expertise. This practical approach to the technology behind Bolted Joint Reliability will be of significant value to all Fluid Sealing Sales and Marketing professionals.
