Medication Safety in Hospice:
Review of Serious Adverse Events with Commonly Used Hospice Medications
An adverse drug event is any undesirable experience associated with the use of a medication in a patient. Although adverse drug events can happen in any setting, patients at end-of-life may be at an increased risk due to changes in organ function, specifically kidney and liver function, as they decline. All patients, regardless of care setting or care goals, deserve safe and effective medication use. Being aware of medication risks helps to support fully informed shared decision making between the hospice team and the patient or caregiver. This presentation will review serious adverse events, including serotonin syndrome and opioid-induced neurotoxicity, that are possible with commonly used medications in hospice.
