Disaster Preparedness: The Pandemic and All-Hazards Preparedness and Advancing Innovation Act of 2019

The US Department of Health and Human Services has released an article regarding the Pandemic and All-Hazards Preparedness and Advancing Innovation Act of 2019 which was signed into law on June 24, 2019. This act builds upon work the US Department of Health and Human Services has been doing under the first Pandemic and All-Hazards Preparedness Act passed in 2006 after Hurricane Katrina.

The law strengthens authorities for specific programs. This includes the Hospital Preparedness Program which aides in providing coordinated medical care during disasters as well as the National Disaster Medical System.

The act also gives flexibility to state health departments related to staffing resources needed to meet the needs of the community during a disaster. The new law bridges gaps, avoids redundancy and sets priorities for federal agencies through a Public Health and Emergency Medical Countermeasures Enterprise.
