Ohio Launches Cancer Drug Take Back Program

A recent article highlighted a new program being pioneered by the James Cancer Hospital in which cancer patients were being permitted to return oral oncology medications, provided the original packaging is intact and the patient signs a donor release form. The program is the result of a change in the Ohio Revised Code, which previously prohibited the donation of already-dispensed medications for use.

Hospice providers have long asked for a program by which they could return unused medications following the death of a patient, but this has been--and continues to be-- prohibited under state law. To date, the only types of medications that can be returned are oral oncology medications.
