Phil Douma

Phil Douma

Phil Douma is a native of Petoskey. He attended Albion College and received his B.A. from Michigan State University. For two years, Phil worked for then-Congressman Bob Davis (R-Gaylord) in Washington D.C.

Phil received his law degree from DePaul University in 1988. After passing the Michigan Bar, Phil associated with the Petoskey Law firm Stroup, Johnson & Tresidder, P.C. and engaged in a general civil law practice. Phil re-entered politics in 1991 when he became the legislative assistant to State Senator George McManus (R-Traverse City). Eight months later, he joined the staff of then-Senate Majority Leader Dick Posthumus (R-Alto). He then moved to the House side of the Capitol in 1993, joining the House Republican Central Caucus Services Staff.

Shortly after the 1996 election, the new House Minority Leader, Ken Sikkema (R-Grandville) named Phil the House Minority Counsel where he served through 1998.

Phil joined MFDA as the Director of Government Relations in January of 1999. He became MFDA’s Interim Executive Director in July of 2000, and was named MFDA’s Executive Director in February, 2001.
