Public Health Museum's DeMaria Honored
State Public Health Campus Named
February 11, 2025-Tewksbury, MA- The Public Health Museum in Massachusetts is pleased to announce that long time board member and former president Dr. Al DeMaria has been recognized for his contributions to public health through the passage of An Act Relative to the Designation of the State Public Health Laboratory Campus in Honor of Dr. Alfred DeMaria, Jr. (H. 5063). This legislation officially names the state public health department campus in Jamaica Plain as “The Dr. Alfred DeMaria, Jr. Campus.”
During his distinguished career, Dr. DeMaria served as the Commonwealth’s state epidemiologist, chief infectious disease medical officer, and assistant commissioner of the Department of Public Health. A dedicated public health leader, Dr. DeMaria is a sought-after expert on the history of infectious disease prevention and control, and champion of local and global public health.
In addition to his professional achievements, Dr. DeMaria has been a core contributor to numerous public health and medical organizations. As subject matter expert for the Public Health Museum, Dr. DeMaria has lent his expertise to exhibit management and programming, educating the public and inspiring students to pursue careers in public health. His leadership, compassion, and commitment to public health have left an enduring impact on our state and beyond.

Celebrating 30 years of educating the public and inspiring future professionals, the museum explores the history of public health through artifacts and exhibits. Learn about Infectious Diseases, Patent Medicines, Food Safety and Pasteurization, early Mental Health, Nursing/Education, early Dentistry, HIV/AIDs and more.
