SB 412 Open Access to Cancer Medication Signed into Law
exempt cancer drugs from prior authorization requirement under Medicaid.
Governor Whitmer signed into law on March 10, 2022, Senate Bill 412 which expands the availability of critical prescription drugs for Michigan cancer patients.
Senate Bill 412, introduced by Senator Curtis Hertel, amends the Social Welfare Act to exempt additional drugs, including cancer drugs, from the current prior authorization requirement under Medicaid.
This bipartisan legislation codifies an annual budget boilerplate item that supporters have fought for every year in the budget process since 2016 but takes it a step further by including cancer drugs, which the budget language has not historically included. MSHO and ASCO have both supported this bill.
MSHO applauds the Governor for signing this bill into law which will ensure that the most vulnerable patients don’t wait a moment longer to access the lifesaving care they need to survive.
