Inside the Hose Safety Institute - April 2015

By: Debbie Mitchell, NAHAD Standards Manager

This year, the NAHAD News and the NAHAD Hoseconnections newsletters will feature a series of updates on the Hose Safety Institute, including:

…and more.  Comments and suggestions are always welcome.

Leading off the series:

Per NAHAD’s Standards Committee, the appropriate pressure at which hose assemblies should be tested is 1.5x working pressure for all new AND used industrial, composite, and fluoropolymer hoses; it remains at 2x working pressure for new hydraulic hose assemblies.  And remember, the working pressure of the assembly is limited by the lowest working pressure of its component parts.  For additional detail, please see your copy of the Institute’s HANDBOOK, or the relevant Fabrication Guide.

In addition, the Standards Committee has reiterated NAHAD’s support for the ARPM (formerly RMA) position on acceptable working pressures for hoses:

The ARPM requires that hose working pressures include a safety factor commensurate with theirintended application. Most hoses are required to meet a 4x safety factor, except the following: Water hose rated under 150 PSI requires a 3x safety factor; Steam hose requires a 10x safety factor; and hose conveying gas in a liquid state requires a 5x safety factor. (For example: a 150 PSI-rated air hose has a 4x safety factor and must be successfully burst tested to a minimum of 600 PSI.) Never exceed the working pressure of the lowest rated component in the hose system. Maximum working pressure includes the highest pressure the system will experience, such as spikes, surges, and water hammer effects. (For example: If a system consists of a hose rated to 150 PSI and the couplings are rated to 500 PSI, the system should never be used in excess of 150 PSI.)

DATES, DEADLINES & DATA: Any outstanding Design/Fabrication exam codes will expire January 31, 2015.  New Fabrication exams are currently available for purchase.  In addition, to be recognized at the upcoming NAHAD convention, Institute members must have completed the new Fabrication exam portion of the membership requirements by April 10.  If you’re not sure of your status, contact Debbie Mitchell at dmitchell@nahad.org for assistance.

Don’t miss resources on the Institute website available for you to download, customize, and use *FREE*.  The latest is our Hose/Assembly Incident Report: Safe, reliable hose assemblies require appropriate specification work up front, and a quality supplier whose work is guided by NAHAD’s Hose Assembly Guidelines.  However, things can go wrong and when they do, it’s important to know why they did. This report will help analyze those issues.
