Goal Pursuit for Outcomes Driven Career Coaching: Techniques for the Practitioner
Imants Jaunarajs, Assistant Vice President, Ohio University
Imants will showcase practical goal pursuit techniques and how practitioners can implement them. Goal pursuit is a research-based neuroscience concept that represents three components: goal setting, goal striving, and goal maintenance. It is common for practitioners to incorporate a goal-setting process when working with clients. Yet, most do not include the more comprehensive concept of goal pursuit and leave out goal striving and goal maintenance. Goal pursuit links behavior change in the short and long term by supporting clients implementing day-to-day action steps, leading to longer-term designated outcomes. Imants will highlight techniques on goal attainment, growth mindset, If/Then thinking, Distance Bias, and Planning Fallacy, etc. while highlighting how a common unified approach has benefited client goal attainment. Attendees will be involved throughout the session and leave with their own action plan for implementing goal pursuit.
Bio: Imants Jaunarajs, M.A., serves as the Assistant Vice President at Ohio University. With over seventeen years of experience in university career centers, Imants is a creator of innovative and outcome driven career development best practices, including Brain Based Career Development (BBCD) and Leadership Coaching (an executive coaching model for undergraduate students). In 2018, Imants’ department was the winner of the National Excellence Award for Career Services Excellence (NACE). Imants earned a Bachelor of Arts from Earlham College and Master of Arts from Western Michigan University.
