NCDA announces the appointment of Dr. Seth C.W. Hayden to the role of editor of the Career Development Quarterly (CDQ), the flagship journal of the National Career Development Association (NCDA). As the premier journal of career development research, the CDQ connects practice, research, and theory with the goal of advancing the mission of NCDA.

Seth C W HaydenDr. Hayden, LCMHC, NCC, CCMHC, ACS, is a professor of counseling at Wake Forest University. He served as the associate editor of the CDQ for the past three years. His editorial roles, scholarly productivity, and understanding of the operational management of CDQ lead to his appointment by the NCDA Board.

Speaking to his commitment to advancing career development research and to  his credibility in critiquing CDQ submissions, Dr. Hayden was author or co-author of 71 publications, including 40 peer-reviewed journal articles. Two articles were top cited publications in career-focused journals: CDQ in 2023 (Osborn et al., 2022) and the Journal of Employment Counseling in 2021 (Hayden & Osborn, 2020). Additionally, he authored Integrating Career Development and Mental Health in Counseling (2025) and was co-author of two NCDA Monographs: Career Development for Transitioning Veterans (2013) and Group Career Counseling (2nd ed.; 2015). He also contributed to other NCDA publications: Career Developments members magazine, and Career Convergence, the web magazine.

Regarding his editorial work, he has served on the editorial board of the Journal of Counseling & Development since 2016 and of CDQ from 2019 to 2023, before transitioning to his current role as associate editor. Along with the out-going editor, Dr. Melinda Gibbons, he developed a detailed plan to address issues impacting the CDQ, which reduced response time for submissions and established a structure for the journal's successful management going forward.
