COURSE DESCRIPTIONS:

OCT Interpretation on Glaucoma – OCT technology has revolutionized ophthalmic care. We
are able to image ocular tissues within a 1-3um accuracy in real time and in vivo. This has had a
profound impact on how we diagnose and manage ocular conditions. In this lecture, we will
discuss the basics of OCT technology, talk about the most common printouts, review cases of
good scans and bad, and speak about emerging technologies.

Minimally Invasive Glaucoma Surgery (MIGS) Procedures – Minimally Invasive Glaucoma
Surgery (MIGS) is the new HOT topic in glaucoma. They fill a gap between medication in
early-moderate glaucoma and our traditional glaucoma procedures (tube/trab) for our more
advanced glaucoma patients. This lecture will review the current MIGS procedures and also talk
about future procedures. The idea of Interventional Glaucoma (IG) where surgical intervention
is implemented earlier in the glaucoma management paradigm will be introduced. We will also
discuss the role new technology plays in the monitoring the glaucoma patient at home (iCare
Home, iPad fields, Disc Photos at home) and lastly we’ll have a brief discussion on new drug
delivery methods.

That’s Some Nerve! Differential Diagnosis, Management, and Imaging of Optic Disc
Edema, Optic Atrophy, and Optic Neuropathies– This course provides an overview of optic
disc edema and its various etiologies. The pathophysiology of optic disc edema and its
differential diagnosis, management, and treatment is discussed and presented with case study
examples. The four major physiological etiologies of disc edema and their associated optic
neuropathies with be covered at-length: ischemia (ischemic optic neuropathy), intracranial
hypertension (papilledema), inflammation (optic neuritis), and compression (compressive optic
neuropathy), and mimickers will also be reviewed (pseudopapilledema/optic disc drusen).
Current trends in diagnostic evaluation, research, and management strategies are emphasized.

Nutraceuticals and the Eyes – This course provides an overview of nutraceuticals and their use
and effects on the eye. Current AREDS protocols for treating age-related macular degeneration
and the use of omega-3 and fish oils for dry eye will be reviewed. Homeopathic and natural
remedies often used by or inquired by patients will be discussed, including the use of
cannabis/cannabinoids in glaucoma treatment. Additionally, vitamin deficiencies and the role of
vitamins and minerals in ocular metabolism will be covered, as well as the potential for toxicity
in excessive doses.

True Ocular Emergencies – This course will be presented in a grand rounds fashion. It will
review the true ocular emergencies that present to an optometric office.

Acute and Chronic Pain Management with Opioids: A Decrease in Pain with a Potential
Increase in Addiction – This course will examine and list the commonly prescribed agents used
for pain management and/or end of life care. It will identify the indications and potential side
effects of commonly prescribed agents used in pain management.
