Diabetes: An Overview for the Primary Care Optometrist
Presented by David M. Krumholz, OD, FAAO

Diabetes and its associated retinopathy is a leading cause of blindness and visual disability that optometrists deal with on a daily basis. While well versed in the ocular effects of diabetes, most optometrists are not too familiar with the systemic aspects of the disease. This course addresses the effects diabetes has on the patient beyond the eye and presents an overview of the systemic effects of the disease, its diagnosis, and its treatment from a primary eye care provider's viewpoint. New information from the new Standards of Medical Care in Diabetes, published in 2018, will be presented.

Systemic Hypertension for the Primary Care Optometrist

High blood pressure accounts for greatest number of office visits to healthcare providers in the U.S. It is a major cause of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, as well as being a major risk factor for stroke and renal disease. While well versed in the effects that systemic hypertension may have on the eye and visual system, many optometrists may not be too familiar with the systemic aspects of the disease. This course addresses the effects hypertension has on the patient beyond the eye and presents an overview of the systemic effects of the disease, its diagnosis, and its treatment from a primary eye care provider's viewpoint. Diagnostic criteria from the recently released new guidelines released in 2017 will be discussed.

Neuro-Optometric Rehabilitation for Traumatic Brain Injury and Post-Concussion Syndrome
Presented by Dr. Vincent R. Vicci, Jr., OD, DPNAP, FNORA

There are 2,500,000 Americans that are treated for traumatic brain injury every year (The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention).  It is estimated that just as many – or more – hit their heads and never have it checked out.  There are 137 Americans that die every day due to a traumatic brain injury-related injury (The Brain Injury Association of America – BIAA).  Many of these injuries involve physical and functional vision problems that prohibit recovery of the activities of daily living unless the appropriate treatment is provided through neuro-optometric rehabilitation. The purpose of this presentation is to increase awareness and recognition of the problems that come into the optometric office on a daily basis and to discuss the unique applications that are the key to successful recovery for these patients.
