Help Us Protect Worker Safety in the Natural Stone Industry

A Message from CEO Jim Hieb

Dear NSI Members,

We need your voice.

In light of recent announcements regarding significant layoffs at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and concern that potential future cuts may impact the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and/or Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), the Natural Stone Institute has sent a formal letter of concern to Secretary of Health and Human Services, Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

We urge you to join us by sending your own letter of support.

Why It Matters: NIOSH, OSHA and MSHA programs have been essential to protecting the health and safety of our workforce, particularly in mitigating the risks of respirable crystalline silica exposure. Cuts to these agencies could seriously compromise the safety resources and regulatory oversight that our industry relies on.

How You Can Help: Please mail a brief letter to the Secretary using the address and suggested talking points below. Your voice, especially when tied to a Congressional district, adds crucial weight to this advocacy effort.

Mail Your Letter To:

The Honorable Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
Secretary of Health and Human Services
U.S. Department of Health and Human Services
200 Independence Avenue, SW
Washington, DC 20201

Suggested Talking Points:

  • NIOSH research and education has significantly improved safety strategies for natural stone industry workers.
  • Cuts threaten essential progress made in silicosis prevention and safe stone fabrication practices.
  • OSHA's role in regulation and consultation ensures consistency and compliance, further cuts would jeopardize both.
  • Urge the Department to maintain full support for NIOSH, OSHA and MSHA programs which are important to the stone industry.
